EMK Musical Company announced on 1 September that it is expanding the casting lineup of the musical "Elisabeth." Park Ji-yeon joins as Empress Elisabeth alongside Lina, Lee Ji-hye and Lee Ji-soo, and Kim Junsu joins as Death alongside Kai, Seo Kyung-soo and Ko Eun-sung, bringing both roles to four performers each.
Park Ji-yeon has been praised for her acting range and singing in productions including "Once," "Maybe Happy Ending" and "Dracula." This is her first season in "Elisabeth," and how she reads the inner life of an empress reaching for freedom against the constraints of her era and station is one of the season's talking points.
Kim Junsu has played Death since the 2012 Korean premiere, returning in 2013, 2018 and for the tenth-anniversary production in 2022; this is his sixth season in the role. He won Best Actor at the Korea Musical Awards for the 2012 premiere and has been part of the production's history in Korea from the beginning.
"Elisabeth" had its world premiere in Vienna in 1992. Its distinctive conceit — the life of the Austrian empress set against Death as a fantastical figure — has carried it to 14 countries and a cumulative audience of more than 12.7 million. In Korea it has run for five seasons since the 2012 premiere, collecting awards at The Musical Awards and the Korea Musical Awards among others.
