Dolsoejeon opens 2 October at the National Jeongdong Theater

"The Lady and Dolsoe", long recycled in Korea as a bawdy joke about desire, meets the Greek myth of Eros and Psyche on stage this autumn. The National Jeongdong Theater presents Dolsoejeon, its 2026 Changjak-ing musical selection, from 2 to 15 October at Jeongdong Theater Cecil. The piece was developed by the creative collective Nongdamsa, with book and lyrics by Kim Min-ju and music and arrangement by Jeong Ji-yeon.

The story opens on the tension between a widowed lady of the house, Dolsoe — the servant who quietly loves her — and Jeongpal, a strapping new hire. A misunderstanding in a watermill during a rainstorm spreads into desire, attachment, jealousy and forgiveness, and the show asks whether wanting a body and loving a heart can really be told apart. A sorikkun does more than narrate: the singer talks directly to the audience and intervenes in the action, carrying the humour and audience participation of Korean madangnori into a musical structure. The score is built on jazz, mixing in classical, gugak and pop idioms scene by scene.

Dolsoejeon was first shown in May 2022 at the Korea National University of Arts, then won the top prize that June at the Daegu International Musical Festival's incubating reading showcase. The Changjak-ing selection turns it into a full production four years later. Lee Gun-hee and Park Geun-sik alternate as Dolsoe, Kim Angela and Kang Su-jin as the lady, and Lee Han-su and Kim Ui-hwan double as Jeongpal and the sorikkun. Park Han-byul directs, Lee Su-yeon is music director and Kim Jin choreographs.

When and where does Dolsoejeon play?

From 2 to 15 October 2026 at Jeongdong Theater Cecil in Jung-gu, Seoul. According to the schedule registered with KOPIS, performances run Monday to Friday at 19:30, with two shows at 14:00 and 18:00 on Sundays and public holidays.
