Parking at Seoul Arts Center: which car park, what it costs, and who pays less

Seoul Arts Center (예술의전당) has two car parks — the Music Hall car park and the Opera House car park — holding 1,310 cars between them. Which entrance you want is decided by the hall or gallery you are visiting, not by the address you type in.

How many car parks are there, and which one do you want?

There are exactly two. Seoul Arts Center's own directions page assigns six venues to one car park and seven to the other.

Typing just "Seoul Arts Center" into a navigation app often routes you to the Music Hall entrance. If you are going to an exhibition at the Hangaram Art Museum, search for the Opera House car park by name from the start.

What does parking cost?

The standard rate is 1,000 won per 10 minutes, and leaving within 30 minutes is free. On top of that sit flat rates by reason for visiting, and every rate carries a 1.5x congestion surcharge at weekends and on public holidays.

Two rows get missed. The cafe and shop rate of 3,000 won for two hours does exist, but only on a spend of 10,000 won or more, and it cannot be combined with the combined-use discount. And if you came for a free exhibition or a free performance, the standard rate applies rather than any flat rate.

This rate card and the discount policy have been in force since 1 September 2022 — the same date the weekend surcharge was reinstated and the stacking of the light-car and low-emission discounts was stopped.

How much does a ticket save you?

Show your ticket before you exit and the flat rate replaces the standard one: 6,000 won for five hours with a performance ticket, 4,000 won for three hours with an exhibition ticket. Since the standard rate works out at 6,000 won an hour, a performance ticket buys five hours for the price of one.

There are three ways to pay. Buying a parking voucher with your ticket when you book through Seoul Arts Center lets you drive straight out with no stop at the barrier (performance tickets only); you can pay at one of the pre-payment machines around the complex; or you can pay at the exit.

What reductions apply for disabled and national-merit visitors?

Holders of a severe-grade welfare card (grades 1 to 3) park free until midnight on the day they arrive, with the standard rate applying beyond that. Grades 4 to 7, independence and national-merit holders and veterans' benefit recipients get 50 percent off the standard rate on an ordinary visit, and with a performance or exhibition ticket they park free for five hours or three hours respectively.

The reduction only applies to a vehicle in which the cardholder is travelling or driving. At a pre-payment machine you have to press the call button and have the card verified.

Light cars and low-emission vehicles also get 50 percent off the standard rate, but since 1 September 2022 that no longer stacks with the flat rates. A light car means under 1,000cc and no more than 3.6 m long, 1.6 m wide and 2 m tall. A low-emission vehicle that cannot be identified by its sticker or badging on the way out is charged the standard rate.

Buses and vehicles over 2.5 tonnes go the other way: they pay double the parking rate, for up to five hours, and double the standard rate beyond that.

Where are the pre-payment machines?

They are spread along the visitor route rather than clustered at the exits. The published locations are:

• Opera House floors 1, 2 and 3
• Music Hall basement level and floor 1
• Hangaram Art Museum floor 1 and Hangaram Design Museum floor 1
• The Hangaram Art Museum plaza walkway
• Vitamin Station

Everyone leaves at once when a performance ends, and the payment queue grows with them. The machines work from the moment you arrive, so paying before curtain-up or at the interval is the quicker route out.

Where can you charge an electric car?

There are 13 slow chargers on level 3 of the Opera House car park and 12 on the RF level of the Music Hall car park. One rapid charger sits outdoors in the special car park.

That is 25 slow chargers and a single rapid one, so if you need a meaningful charge inside the running time of a performance, the outdoor rapid charger is the only candidate.

Can you check whether there is space before you set off?

The directions and parking page on the Seoul Arts Center website shows live space counts for both car parks. The same page gives their capacities: 611 spaces at the Music Hall car park and 699 at the Opera car park, 1,310 in all.

Set against a Concert Hall that seats 2,505 on its own, 1,310 spaces is not a generous number on a night when several halls have performances. The live count moves constantly, so check it again just before you leave.

How bad is it at weekends?

Seoul Arts Center states on its own page that its car parks are full throughout weekends and public holidays all year round, and asks visitors to use public transport. It gave the same reason for reinstating the weekend surcharge on 1 September 2022.

By public transport it is a 5 to 10 minute walk from Exit 5 of Nambu Bus Terminal station on Line 3, or two stops on village bus 22. From Exit 3 of Seocho station on Line 2 it is four stops on village bus 11; from Exit 1 of Sadang station on Line 4 it is 16 stops on village bus 17. Trunk buses 405 and 406, branch bus 5413, express buses 1500-2 and 1553 and village buses Seocho 11, 17 and 22 all pass the entrance.

In short

1. There are two car parks and the choice is made for you: the Concert Hall and Calligraphy Museum sit with the Music Hall car park, the Hangaram museums and the Opera Theater with the Opera car park.
2. A ticket buys a flat rate — 6,000 won for five hours at a performance, 4,000 won for three at an exhibition. But a free exhibition or free performance does not qualify, and you pay the standard 1,000 won per 10 minutes.
3. Weekends and holidays carry a 1.5x surcharge on every rate and the car parks run full. There are 1,310 spaces, and the Concert Hall alone seats 2,505.
