Haegeum player Kang Eun-il returns to the series in which she retraces the sanjo of Korea's masters through her own playing. Her 31st solo recital, I Am Kim Young-jae, takes place at 17:00 on Sunday 20 September in Umyeondang Hall at the National Gugak Center. It is the fourteenth concert in her Rooted in Tradition series and the fourth in the Sanjo Project, which has previously taken on the sanjo of Han Beom-su, Ji Yeong-hui and Seo Yong-seok. This year she turns to Kim Young-jae, a haegeum and geomungo player who has also worked as a composer and teacher.
The programme opens with Prologue: Staying, arranged and performed by Kang. She then plays Kim Young-jae's Long Sanjo for haegeum with Ryu Gyeong-hwa on janggu, followed by Jeongnyeom, Kim's work for haegeum and guitar, with guitarist Kim Gi-jung. Kim Young-jae joins for the closing Gut Pungnyu Sinawi, in which Kang's haegeum is set against Kim Yeong-gil's ajaeng, Ryu Gyeong-hwa's cheolhyeongeum and Kim Gi-jung's guitar.
Kim Young-jae studied haegeum with Ji Yeong-hui and inherited Shin Kwae-dong's geomungo music, while also learning pansori, folk song and jeongga and studying composition — layering several traditional idioms into a music of his own. Alongside Jeongnyeom his works include Bi, Jomyeonggok, Gyemyeonggok and Gyeonmyeonggok. Of this recital Kang has said that the years spent seeking out the masters' sanjo turned out to be years spent asking after her own music, and that keeping a tradition means not repeating the old but understanding its spirit deeply enough to make it live again through who you are today.
