Can I drive to 3·15 Art Center?

You can, but do not plan on using the building's own car park. The Changwon Cultural Foundation's official directions page states that "entry to the car park is restricted from 30 minutes before the performance to prevent congestion, so audience members arriving by car must park at the sports complex." Since the auditorium opens 30 minutes before curtain, the venue's own lot closes at exactly the hour visitors arrive.

The "sports complex" the notice points to is the attached car park at the Masan sports complex, home to Changwon NC Park and Masan Gymnasium. It sits about 630 m in a straight line from 3·15 Art Center at 135 Samho-ro, Masanhoewon-gu — a figure calculated from the KOPIS coordinates we hold. That is roughly a ten-minute walk.

How much does parking at the Masan sports complex cost?

For an evening performance, effectively nothing. The Masanhoewon Sports Center attached car park, operated by Changwon Facilities Management Corporation, charges only between 08:00 and 19:00; from 19:00 until 08:00 the next morning it is free. Weekday evening performances usually start at 19:30, so a car that enters after 19:00 pays nothing.

For a daytime performance, a standard car pays 500 won for the first 30 minutes and 200 won per 10 minutes after that. Three hours costs 3,500 won, and the daily charge is capped at 5,000 won.

The car park has 1,685 spaces: 10 for large vehicles and 1,675 for standard cars, the latter including 1,611 general, 50 accessible, 8 expectant-mother and 6 electric-vehicle bays. Changwon Facilities Management Corporation does warn that "the number of available spaces is reduced by professional baseball games and other events." It is worth checking whether an NC Dinos home game falls on your performance date. Large vehicles cannot use this car park at all and must use the Yangdeok-dong public car park instead.

Which buses go to 3·15 Art Center?

The bus stop is named "315 Art Center." The routes listed on the Changwon Cultural Foundation's official directions page are trunk routes 100, 105 and 108; branch routes 250 and 259; rural routes 46, 49, 53 and 80; and industrial-estate route 540. Because the car park closes exactly when performances begin, the bus is the easier choice at showtime.

How many seats does the Grand Theater have, and how are they arranged?

The Grand Theater seats 1,182. According to the official seating-chart file the Changwon Cultural Foundation distributes, the first level holds 908 seats and the second level 274. The 908 on the first level break down into 834 standard seats, 54 orchestra pit seats and 20 wheelchair spaces; the 274 upstairs are 250 standard seats plus 24 balcony seats.

That total of 1,182 matches exactly the seat count in the KOPIS performing-arts facility registration we hold. The 20 wheelchair spaces match the KOPIS figure too.

Which seats have the best view in the Grand Theater?

For the full width of the stage, the front rows of the second level; for the performers' faces, the front section of the first level. The Grand Theater's proscenium is 10 m high, 16.5 m wide and 16 m deep, so the stage is unusually deep — for a production that uses the full depth, sitting slightly back is more comfortable than sitting very close.

The second level has few rows per block, so even its back rows are not much further from the stage than the rear of the first level.

Row O is the set of 54 seats laid over the orchestra pit. For opera, ballet and musicals that put the orchestra below the stage, these seats are not sold at all; they open only for productions that leave the pit unused. They are closest to the stage, but the height of the stage floor means looking upward throughout.

Rows D and E are balcony seats set against the side walls of the first level, 12 on each side for a total of 24. They face the stage at an angle rather than head on, which makes them very much a matter of taste.

Does the Small Theater have 463 seats or 485?

Two numbers describe the same hall. The official Small Theater seating-chart file distributed by the Changwon Cultural Foundation gives a total of 463 seats — 455 standard plus 8 wheelchair spaces. The foundation's own written introduction to 3·15 Art Hall, and the KOPIS facility registration we hold, both say 485. The gap is 22 seats.

The seating chart is what ticketing is based on, so 463 is the number to work from. The 485 appears to be the original design capacity, left in place in the descriptive text and the registration record. The 8 wheelchair spaces match exactly between the chart and the KOPIS entry.

The Small Theater is a single level with no balcony. On the seating chart, block A on the left holds 154 seats, block B in the centre 160 and block C on the right 141, with one cross aisle between the front and rear sections.

The Small Theater's proscenium is 6.5 m high, 15 m wide and 10 m deep — 6 m shallower than the Grand Theater. Performers stand closer to the audience, and with no second level, every block is a short distance from the stage.

How do I book a wheelchair space?

By phone, in advance. The booking number printed on the Changwon Cultural Foundation's official seating notice is 055-719-7800~3, and the spaces are reservation-only. There are 20 in the Grand Theater and 8 in the Small Theater, and both figures match the accessible-seat counts in the KOPIS registration we hold.

The Grand Theater's wheelchair spaces sit along the back row of the first level. The Small Theater's are behind the front section, which puts them at mid-height in the auditorium and closer to the stage.

Can I bring a child?

As a rule, children under 8 — that is, below primary-school age — are not admitted. The Changwon Cultural Foundation's FAQ states plainly that no exception is made even for a child who is used to sitting through concerts. Productions with a lower age limit, such as children's plays and ballets, say so on the ticket and in the publicity material.

Children from 3 years old (36 months) up to primary-school age can be left in the children's playroom. You show your performance ticket to use it, and because it has a fixed capacity, it may be full if a great many children come to the same show.

What should I know so I am not caught out on arrival?

The auditorium opens 30 minutes before the performance. The Changwon Cultural Foundation's FAQ recommends arriving at least 30 minutes ahead and warns that collecting tickets in the lobby can take time when it is busy. Since that overlaps with the car park restriction, allow an hour if you are driving.

Rustling plastic bags, bouquets and food must be left at the cloakroom. Photography, audio recording and video recording are all prohibited during performances, and tickets are treated as securities, so a lost or damaged ticket is not reissued under any circumstances.

Bookings can be cancelled up to the start of the performance on the day, with a fee that depends on when you cancel. Telephone cancellations are taken only on weekdays from 09:00 to 18:00 on 055-286-0315.

Is it called 3·15 Art Center or 3·15 Art Hall?

It is one venue, and its operator uses both names. The Changwon Cultural Foundation website menu says "3·15 Art Hall," yet the seating-chart files the same foundation distributes are named "315 Art Center Grand Theater seating chart," and the city bus stop is called "315 Art Center." Far more people search for 315 Art Center.

3·15 Art Center opened on 20 May 2008 at a total construction cost of 64 billion won. Alongside the Grand and Small Theaters it holds three exhibition rooms, an international conference hall, a rehearsal room and lecture rooms.

Three things to remember

1. Park at the Masan sports complex. The venue's own car park closes to entry 30 minutes before the performance, and the official alternative is the Masanhoewon Sports Center car park, 630 m away with 1,685 spaces. It is free from 19:00, so evening performances cost nothing to park for.
