How many seats does Dongtan Art Hall have, and how are they split?

Dongtan Art Hall (동탄아트홀), the main auditorium of Hwaseong Arts Center (화성예술의전당), seats 1,450. That is 981 seats on level 1 and 469 on level 2, with 15 wheelchair spaces counted inside the total. The hall covers 13,766㎡ with a stage area of 970.14㎡. If a ticket page lists the venue as "화성예술의전당 동탄아트홀", this is the hall.

The figure is worth stating precisely, because the two independent sources agree exactly. KOPIS, Korea's official performing-arts data network, registers Dongtan Art Hall at 1,450 seats, and the venue's own facility page gives 981 + 469 — which comes to the same 1,450. KOPIS also registers 15 accessible seats for the hall, so even the wheelchair count matches. Agreement down to the per-floor split is less common than you would expect.

Which seats are R grade for an opera here?

For opera, R grade covers the front-to-middle rows of centre block B on level 1, plus the aisle-side rows of the left and right A and C blocks. The outer edges and the rear of level 1 drop to S grade, level 2 is mostly A grade, and the far sides and separate rear block of level 2 are B grade, branded 행복석 ("happiness seats").

Which rows on level 1 give the best view?

The most comfortable view of the whole stage on level 1 is centre block B, rows 7 to 15. Level 1 runs from row 1 to row 23 across three blocks — A on the left, B in the centre, C on the right — and the centre block holds up to 18 seats per row. The orchestra pit sits in front of row 1 and the control booth behind row 23.

• For opera and ballet, which use the pit, the orchestra sits in front of the stage. Rows 1–3 are close but angle your eyeline upward, and the pit can be loud from there.
• Row 10 has an aisle in front of it. The plan splits rows 1–9 from rows 10–23, so row 10 is less likely to be blocked by the head in front.
• The side blocks angle further off-centre the further out you go. Within the same S grade, pick a seat number nearer the centre aisle.
• The 15 wheelchair spaces sit along the level 1 aisles and can only be booked by phone on 1551-2313, not online.

The rear of level 1 sits under the control booth window and the overhang of the level 2 balcony. Those rows trade distance for shelter: the balcony covers them overhead, so the reverberation reads differently than it does further forward.

Does the safety rail block the view from row 1 on level 2?

You can see the stage fine, but the rail cuts across the lower part of your view. If you do not want to lose action played out on the stage floor, rows 2–3 are safer than row 1. Level 2 runs rows 1 to 9 for 469 seats, with up to 21–22 seats per row in the centre block, and it is raked more steeply than level 1, so heads in front are rarely a problem.

The far side blocks are usually priced as B grade (행복석) for opera. At around ₩10,000 they are cheap, but you see the stage at a considerable angle — for the staging itself, centre A grade is the better buy.

If you cannot decide, start with the venue's VR tour, which covers the lobby, the level 1 seating, the level 1 stage and the level 2 seating in 360 degrees. One quirk worth knowing: the VR tab inside the facility-information page reads "준비중" (in preparation), but the tour at the address above opens normally — checked September 2026.

Where should you book to avoid the booking fee?

Book through the venue's own site (hac.hcf.or.kr) or by phone on 1551-2313 and the booking fee is zero. The same ticket bought through NOL Interpark carries ₩1,000–2,000 per ticket. On four tickets that is up to ₩8,000. For an identical seat, the venue's own site simply costs less.

• Payment is by credit card or bank transfer, and bank transfer closes 4 days before the performance date.
• Wheelchair spaces can only be asked about and booked by phone on 1551-2313.
• Where a performance carries an age limit, you cannot enter even holding a ticket and even accompanied by a guardian. Not knowing the limit is not grounds for a same-day cancellation, refund or change.
• The box office does not open on days with no performance.

When can you collect tickets, and how late can you cancel?

At Dongtan Art Hall, ticket collection opens 90 minutes before curtain. That is 30 minutes earlier than the other venues run by the Hwaseong Cultural Foundation, which typically open one hour before. The venue also asks you to arrive at least 30 minutes before curtain.

Cancellation comes down to two deadlines. For Monday-to-Saturday performances, 17:00 the day before; for Sunday performances, 11:00 on the Saturday. After that, and for anything booked on the day itself, there is no cancellation, change or refund.

The cancellation fee depends on where you booked. The foundation's own site holds a flat 10% right up to the day before; NOL Ticket escalates as the date approaches.

If your plans are uncertain, the foundation's site is the better channel. One more catch: the booking fee itself is only refundable until midnight on the day you book — after that, cancelling the ticket does not return the fee. Tickets bought privately rather than through an official seller cannot be cancelled or refunded at all.

Where is the parking and what does it cost?

The Hwaseong Arts Center car park and its overflow car park are both free, 3 to 6 minutes on foot. But the venue's own notice is blunt about it — "parking is limited, please use public transport where possible" — and if a full car park makes you arrive after curtain, you may not be admitted, with no refund.

One thing to be clear about: the only nearby car parks named on the venue's official site are 여울공원 주차장 and 여울공원 지하주차. The rate table below comes from the on-site parking notice rather than the official website, and Hwaseong's municipal parking tariffs do change. If the exact cost matters, confirm through the Hwaseong integrated parking portal or on 1551-2313.

Work the numbers and it gets concrete. An opera with a 160-minute running time, plus getting in and out, puts you near three and a half hours of parking — and Dongtan Yeoul Park starts charging ₩500 per 10 minutes the moment you pass three hours. For an evening performance, the Osan-dong public car park is free from 23:00, which can make it the cheaper choice.

Where are the cloakroom and the nursing room?

The box office, the cloakroom and the nursing room are all on the ground floor, and all three run from one hour before curtain until the performance ends. Large bouquets and suitcases — common enough at an opera — go to the cloakroom. Valuables are the exception: the venue asks you to keep those on you.

The house rules are worth knowing in advance too.

• Food and drink: nothing may be brought in or consumed except clear bottled water with a lid.
• Photography and recording: no photography, video or audio recording without prior agreement.
• Dress: no formal code, though fabrics that rustle loudly are best avoided.
• Young children: admission follows each performance's own age rating, so check the performance page.
