Mapo Art Center: Art Hall Mac and Play Mac Seat Views and Parking

Mapo Art Center is a multi-purpose arts complex in Daeheung-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, run by the Mapo Foundation for Arts and Culture. This guide answers the two questions people ask before booking, "what will the stage look like from my seat" and "can I drive there", from the venue's own published information. Everything was checked in September 2026 against the foundation's facility, rental, parking and shuttle pages, and against the hall records registered with KOPIS, Korea's performing-arts data network.

Which performance halls does Mapo Art Center have?

Two halls sell tickets: Art Hall Mac, the main auditorium, and Play Mac, the studio theatre. Gallery Mac on the 2nd floor is an exhibition space rather than a theatre.

One thing worth knowing: KOPIS registers three performance halls at Mapo Art Center, not two. Art Hall Mac at 1,004 seats, Play Mac at 201 and Studio 3 at 120, for a total of 1,325. The foundation's own site presents only Art Hall Mac, Play Mac and Gallery Mac under its "Art Hall" menu and lists Studios 1, 2 and 3 as ancillary facilities without publishing a capacity. If you have booked something in Studio 3, ask the presenter for the seat count.

The official site also disagrees with itself. The facility and rental pages give 1,004 and 201 seats, but the same site's floor guide describes Art Hall Mac as a 733-seat hall and its 3rd-floor page calls Play Mac a 180-seat one. Art Hall Mac added seats in its 2021 renovation, so the floor guide appears to carry pre-renovation numbers. That is also why figures like 733 or 781 turn up on third-party sites. For booking and rental purposes 1,004 and 201 are the current numbers, and the KOPIS record agrees.

How many Art Hall Mac seats actually go on sale?

Fewer than the 1,004 the hall holds. Here is the official seating breakdown.

So at most 980 seats are sold, and 919 when the orchestra pit stays closed. The OP seats sit in the orchestra pit, so whether they exist at all depends on the production. The 12 wheelchair spaces never appear in the online seat map; they are released by phone or at the box office.

A small caveat: the official table's "539 on sale" cell actually reads 537, which does not square with its own subtotal. 549 minus 10 held back is 539, and 539 plus 61 OP seats is the 600 the subtotal states. We have used the internally consistent 539.

Facing the stage, the OP seats are at the very front, with section A on the left, B in the centre and C on the right fanning out behind them. There are four entrances, gates 1 (front left), 2 (rear left), 3 (rear right) and 4 (front right), and the wheelchair spaces sit around rows 15 to 16 of sections A and C.

The proscenium stage measures 15.2m wide at its widest by 10.4m deep by 8.1m high, and the orchestra pit is 13.1m across at the top, 11m at the bottom and 3.8m deep. Thirty motorised battens, a 480-circuit lighting rig and a SIAP MK V variable-acoustics system let the hall take everything from classical recitals to pop concerts.

How different is the view from each part of the Art Hall Mac stalls?

The foundation publishes a 360-degree "Concert Hall VR" tour that lets you stand in each section. The photographs below are screens captured from that tour, moving seat by seat.

From row 2 of the OP seats the grand piano's keyboard is right in front of you. You have to tilt your head well back to see the overhead lighting, which makes these seats ideal if you want to watch a performer's hands and face. The trade-off is that you cannot take in the whole stage at once.

Row 2 of section A is still well forward, so the stage wall and lighting truss fill most of the upper view. The stage floor and the performers are close, but this is a seat for being absorbed in the performers rather than for reading the whole stage picture.

By row 13 of section A the full stage width, the lighting grid and the acoustic reflectors all fit in one view, and the grand piano reads at a natural size. If this is your first visit to Art Hall Mac, this is the safest place to sit.

Row 8 of section B sits beside the steps and aisle, which makes getting in and out easy. The stage is a little off-centre from here but nothing meaningful is blocked. Worth considering if you may need to leave your seat during the performance or slip out early.

From the back row of the stalls the whole stage and the auditorium beyond it sit above the heads in front of you. You lose proximity, but for lighting design and scene changes the wider picture is an advantage.

Are any Art Hall Mac balcony seats restricted?

Yes. In the front rows of section D on the second floor, a speaker tower and a wall column cut into one side of the view.

The stage itself is perfectly visible, but if you want it square on and uninterrupted, check the seating plan for the column and speaker positions before you book.

Further back on the second floor the eye level rises considerably, and with it the sweep across the stage and the stalls below. For opera or dance, where the movement across the stage is the point, the rear balcony is a reasonable choice.

Is every seat in Play Mac a good one?

Close to it. Play Mac is small enough that you can read a performer's expression from the back row. It is a 201-seat studio theatre on the third floor, a figure that includes 22 flexible seats and 3 wheelchair spaces.

The stage dimensions come in two versions on the official site as well. The facility page gives 6.15m wide by 4.8m deep, while the rental page describes a flexible box stage of 10m wide by 6m deep by 4.6m high. It is a variable stage, so these look like the basic setting and the fuller extent. If you are considering hiring the space, work from the technical files on the rental page.

Row C puts the stage floor right at your feet. Even with the stage bare, the timber walls and the lighting truss feel close, which suits work where contact with the stage matters, puppetry above all.

By row F both side walls, the full stage width and the red seats in front all fit in one view, and the overhead lighting rig is clearly visible, which makes it a good place to read the shape of a production.

Row I is close to the side wall, so you watch the stage at an angle. There is more of a slant than from the centre, but the hall is small enough that it never feels cramped.

Row L counts as the back of Play Mac, yet the distance to the stage is far shorter than in the main hall. You get the lighting truss and the full stage width in view while still being able to make out faces.

Row D faces row C from the other side of the house. Despite sitting next to a speaker, the view stayed open across the whole stage.

Even from row N, the very back, the stage reads clearly beyond the rows of red seats. It feels nothing like the back row of the main hall, which is rather the point of a studio theatre.

How much does parking cost at Mapo Art Center?

Ticket holders pay 3,000 won for three hours, then 500 won per additional 10 minutes, capped at 15,000 won a day.

Discounts run at 80% for disabled drivers and national merit recipients, and 50% for compact cars, low-emission vehicles and families with several children. Where more than one applies, only the largest is given. These rates have applied since 11 July 2024.

There are 145 bays in total, and this is the most practical thing in this guide: they are not all available to an ordinary car.

In other words an ordinary car is competing for 125 spaces, not 145. All nine surface bays are electric-vehicle only, six parking bays plus three chargers, so nothing else parks at ground level, and all seven accessible bays are on B1. The B2 car park is separately listed as open 06:00 to 22:00.

The car park as a whole opens 05:30 to 22:30 on weekdays, 06:00 to 21:30 on Saturdays and 08:00 to 17:30 on holidays, staying open until an hour after a performance ends. The foundation itself warns that the car park is small and often full and asks visitors to use public transport. Congestion or a delay finding a space is not grounds for cancelling, refunding or changing a booking.

If you are charged incorrectly, refunds are handled by email (sirius@mfac.or.kr) or at the sports centre desk, with a refund form and proof such as your ticket or class record and the parking receipt. Where should you park if the car park is full?

The foundation names two nearby alternatives. For both, the discount is registered at the venue's cloakroom inside the box office, not at the car park itself, and within 15 minutes of the performance ending.

At Somgeumnaru Library the ticket-holder rate is not always the cheaper option, and the official notice says so. Under 1 hour 15 minutes the standard rate costs less, and if you qualify for the 50% reduction for a compact, low-emission or multi-child vehicle, that reduction wins up to about 2 hours 25 minutes. At 200 won per 5 minutes, 75 minutes comes to exactly the 3,000 won a ticket holder pays; at half rate it is 100 won per 5 minutes, so 145 minutes costs 2,900 won. Discounts cannot be combined.

Somgeumnaru Library is managed by the Mapo Facilities Management Corporation control centre on 02-373-5402, and the Sogang car park by the university's parking team on 02-705-8259.

How does the Mapo Art Center shuttle bus work?

It is not one route but five, covering the whole of Mapo-gu. All five leave Mapo Art Center at 9 minutes past the hour and return at 50 minutes past, running 25-seat minibuses.

The first bus is at 08:09 and the last at 18:09 on weekdays, and at 16:09 on Saturdays, with a break from 13:00 to 14:00. There is no service on Sundays or public holidays.

Two conditions are easy to miss. Once a week each bus stops running after noon for servicing and driver rest days. And because these are 25-seat vehicles, boarding can be restricted when they are busy; the foundation asks passengers to switch to public transport if a bus is more than five minutes late. Live vehicle positions are available through the tracking app the foundation names, with the access details published on its shuttle bus page.

How do you get to Mapo Art Center by public transport?

It is a five-minute walk from exit 2 of Daeheung station on subway line 6, and ten minutes from exit 5 of Ewha Womans University station on line 2. For buses, exit 6 at Ewha is the more convenient one.

The centre sits among the Hongdae, Sinchon and Sogang university districts, so there is plenty nearby before or after a show. Seating and parking guides for other venues are collected under visiting tips.
