빛고을시민문화관 (Bitgoeul Civic Culture Center) is a venue run by the Gwangju Cultural Foundation on the Gwangjucheon stream beside Gwangju Park (7 Cheonbyeonjwa-ro 338beon-gil, Nam-gu). It opened in 2010. The building has two basement levels and four floors above ground, holding a three-tier main hall, the smaller Art Space hall, a gallery and rehearsal rooms. Every figure below was checked in October 2026 against the venue's official hall, parking, directions and FAQ pages and against KOPIS, Korea's national performing-arts database.

The address appears two ways: KOPIS and the website footer use the new 전남광주통합특별시 (Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City), while the website's facility page still says 광주광역시 (Gwangju Metropolitan City). Search navigation apps for "빛고을시민문화관" or "천변좌로338번길 7".

How many seats does 빛고을시민문화관 have, and how do I read a seat number?

The hall at 빛고을시민문화관 is officially 715 seats over three floors: 333 on the first, 198 on the second and 162 on the third. Each floor has left, center and right sections: 가, 나, 다 on the first floor; 라, 마, 바 on the second; 사, 아, 자 on the third. A ticket reading 나-88 is seat 88 in the center section of the first floor.

Counting the numbered seats on the official chart, section by section:

FloorNumbered seats by sectionTotalWheelchair spaces
1F가 95, 나 143, 다 9533327 across the front row (7, 13, 7)
2F라 60, 마 78, 바 601986, three at the back of 라 and of 바
3F사 52, 아 58, 자 52162None

There are no row letters. Each section is numbered continuously from 1, starting at the front row and running left to right, so a higher number means further back.

  • The center sections 나 and 마 have 13 seats per row, so dividing the seat number by 13 and rounding up gives the row: 나-88 is in row 7, 나-133 in the back row, row 11.
  • On the chart the first floor has 11 rows, the second 6 to 7 and the third 5 to 6. The upper tiers are shallow, so even their back rows are not far from the stage.
  • Wheelchair spaces are across the front of the first floor and at the back corners of the second. The official FAQ's "33 accessible seats, at the front of the first floor and the back of the second" matches the 27 + 6 symbols on the chart exactly.

Why is 빛고을시민문화관 "715 seats" when its floors add up to 693?

The official hall page of 빛고을시민문화관 lists 333, 198 and 162 seats by floor, which add up to 693. Yet the same page writes "715 in total" against every floor. The gap is 22 seats.

Those 22 match exactly the 22 accessible seats KOPIS records for the 빛고을시민문화관 hall, and KOPIS also gives the hall 715 seats. So 715 looks like the 693 numbered seats plus 22 accessible seats.

The chart and the official FAQ, however, both show 33 accessible spaces, and 693 + 33 is 726. The first-floor figure of 333 is also labelled "including accessible seats", which does not match the 333 numbered seats on the chart. No official source says which 22 of the 33 are inside the 715. KOPIS adds one more number: 815 for the facility as a whole.

For an audience member the useful number is 693 numbered seats. For wheelchair bookings, ask the show's promoter or the venue's facilities line, +82-62-670-7931.

Where are the best first-floor seats at 빛고을시민문화관?

The first floor of 빛고을시민문화관 is the closest to the stage and has the most head-on seats. For plays and musicals where faces matter, look first at the middle rows of the center 나 section, seats numbered roughly 40 to 100-something.

The official photo from 나-88 shows the stage filling the frame head-on, edge to edge, without having to look up.

The front side seat 가-01 is very close but sees the stage at an angle, with eyes roughly level with the stage floor, so movement at floor level is hard to follow. Fine for a concert where proximity is the point; tiring on the neck over a two-hour play.

Where are the best second- and third-floor seats at 빛고을시민문화관?

The second floor of 빛고을시민문화관 looks down over the whole stage, so for dance, ballet or orchestral concerts, where the overall picture matters, the center 마 section can beat the back of the first floor. On the third floor, start with the center 아 section.

Even from 마-75, the back row of the second-floor center, the full stage frame sits straight ahead. With only 6 to 7 rows, the back of the second floor does not feel far.

The second-floor side front (라-01) looks across at an angle but with nothing in the way.

The third floor is the furthest and steepest. From 아-44 the whole stage floor is visible but the railing crosses the bottom of the view, and in the side front rows it cuts diagonally across the stage.

The official view photos were taken with the acoustic shell up, so a show's set will look different. On the official seat chart, clicking an orange circle opens the view photo nearest the seat you want.
